How to Turn an iPhone 3G Into a Router

    • 1). Purchase an Internet Tethering data plan from your cellular provider. Verizon customers need to subscribe to Verizon Mobile Hotspot to use their iPhone 3Gs for Internet Tethering. AT&T customers need to subscribe to AT&T DataPro 4G. Make changes to your cellular plan by calling customer service or logging into your online account.

    • 2). Click on the "Settings" icon on your iPhone's home screen.

    • 3). Select the "General" tab from the Settings menu and tap "Network."

    • 4). Tap "Internet Tethering."

    • 5). Turn Internet Tethering on by tapping the On/Off switch. When turned on, the button will be highlighted blue. You'll be stopped at this point if you don't have Internet Tethering as part of your cellular data package.

    • 6). Press the "Home" button at the bottom of your iPhone to return to the home screen. Your phone is now ready to be used as a router.

    • 7). Connect to the Internet via wireless, USB or a Bluetooth connection. If your computer is Wi-Fi-enabled, select your iPhone from the list of wireless connections recognized by your computer. For a USB connection, plug your iPhone 3G into your computer and select "iPhone" from the list of available networks under network settings. For a Bluetooth connection, click the Bluetooth icon in the lower menu bar and select "Join a Personal Area Network" from the drop-down menu. Highlight your iPhone from the list of Bluetooth devices and click "Connect."

    • 8). Look for the blue bar at the top of your iPhone that reads "Internet Tethering." This indicates that the tethering was successful. You can now access the Internet on your computer through your iPhone's 3G network.
