A few months back I was really struggling with my consistency off the tees.
I was cracking the ball off the tee as hard as I could and more or less hoping for the best.
So no surprise then that more than a few were finding their way into the rough and more times than I would like to admit into the houses on the other side of the highway.
Of course for any golfer this is highly frustrating because if you do not leave yourself a good line into the greens you can forget about shooting a low score.
The problem was that I was not really playing enough to get a good feel and consistent rhythm and I did not have the time or the extra cash to spend on lessons.
So I managed to dig through some golfing magazines to try and find some answers.
The problem I found however was that although a lot of the advice that was given in various articles was good it would only work for certain types of golfers.
Eventually however I managed to take little pieces from different articles and string them together into something I thought might work for me.
This is what I came up with, some very easy and simple steps to improving your accuracy that worked magic on my game.
The first thing you are going to need to do is to check your alignment.
You might think, well I know that I line up straight, but if you have not actually checked you might be in for a surprise like I was.
I was sure that I was lining up straight, however the first time I put a club down to check my foot alignment I was shocked to find I was aiming way out to the left.
This was fantastic because in less than a minute and with no extra practice I had managed to cure my ongoing struggle with my power slice.
The next thing is to check your take back.
When taking the club head back keep your right hand soft and your left hand firm so that you lead the club back with the left hand.
This forced me to take the club head back on a straight line because the left arm is extended and therefore can not easily bend at any part of the backswing whereas the right arm can bend at either the wrist or the elbow causing an uneven back swing.
Once the backswing is smooth and even, the follow through will follow suit provided you let the club do the work and do not try and muscle the ball.
Lastly ease down on the power into the shot.
One way is to only use a three quarter backswing or otherwise make sure that your arms are allowing the club to swing through like a pendulum and you are not trying to muscle the ball.
Well what about the distance you might say.
Well I look at it this way, I would rather loose ten metres on my distance and find my ball in the middle of the fairway, than hit the longest drive of my life and spend an hour looking for my ball.
Also remember that distance is not about muscle, it is about timing and motion through the ball two things that can only improve with lots of practice.
Bubba Watson is one of the longest hitters on the PGA tour and if you watch him swing you can see that he generates his powers by rotating his hips through the shot just ahead of the club head.
This means that he is using his core muscles (stomach) to generate power rather than upper body strength.
These tips should help you improve your accuracy through all your shots, so before your next round hit some balls at the range and try this advice, hopefully it can help you shoot one of your lowest scores yet.
