- This is a mosquito that is readily found in Florida and throughout the tropics. The insect is nocturnal and a carrier of many pathogens; such as the Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEv), St Loius encephalitis virus (SLEv) and Western Nile virus (WNv). To prevent being bitten by this mosquito, it is advised to wear long sleeves at night, along with a mosquito repellent. Other pest control measures would include removing or chemically treating all stagnant water bodies, and changing water frequently where water is exposed.
- This mosquito lives in polluted water areas, hence the name. This mosquito can be identified under a microscope by the prominent white bands on its proboscis and legs. These types of mosquitoes are carriers of the Western Equine Encephalitis virus (WEEv) and the West Nile virus (WNv). The male adults do not bite humans, but feed on nectar. Females however, need blood to have their eggs developed. The best way to control these pests is to eliminate their breeding areas, which are the polluted waters.
- The name of this mosquito comes from the habit of its larvae to get attached to tules, grass or cattails. The tule mosquito is reddish in color and has no bands on its proboscis or legs. This mosquito is known to be a carrier or the St Louis encephalitis virus (SLEv) and Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEv).
The best way to control these pests is by removing all clogged water, using mosquito repellent and with the help of mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis) which feed on the larvae. - This mosquito has white bands around its joints and the center of its proboscis. This mosquito breeds extensively and if unabated, it can multiply very fast in the shortest of times. The favorite breeding places of these mosquitoes are the stagnant waters around homes, irrigation lands, barns and animals enclosures. They feed on humans and animals alike; and they are carriers of the Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEv).
The best pest control measures for these pests include removal or chemical treatment of all stagnant water and using mosquito repellent.
