Tires - Tips to Prevent Unexpected Tire Repair

Taking good care of your tires is truly an investment in your vehicle. However, they are one of the most overlooked of all the vehicle components. Checking for any potential problems on a monthly basis (especially before a long road trip) is the best way to prevent costly tire repair or even more expensive damage to your car from occurring, and most importantly, enhances the safety of your passengers.

Check air pressure and take care of any under-inflated tires immediately. The resistance of an under-inflated tire will cause heat, which could then cause damage resulting in tire repair or replacement, and increase fuel consumption. When you are checking the air pressure in your tires, don’t forget to check the spare. Inspecting and filling your spare with air at the same time is good practice so that hopefully, you’ll never be stranded by the side of the road with a flat.

Checking the tread depth is easy to do. Place the edge of a penny upside down in the grooves. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for a replacement. Is the inside groove and the outside edge wearing evenly? If not, this may be a sign that your car is out of alignment. Do you feel your steering wheel vibrating? Your tire has probably lost its balance weight. Having the necessary wheel alignment or wheel balancing will help with the overall ride, comfort, and handling of your vehicle.

And finally, have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. This will ensure that all four wear at the same rate. If they show signs of excessive wear and tear, don’t just replace one -- get all four replaced. At the very least, purchase the two front ones, or the two back ones at the same time. Consider the climate where you live and the use of your vehicle, and you will know the best kind to purchase for your type of driving.

If you follow the guidelines above, you are sure to prevent expensive tire repair, and maintain and extend the life of your tires, your vehicle, and your safety.
