- The WordPress tag cloud widget will list up to 45 of your most-used tags in alphabetical order, using different font sizes to display how frequently each tag appears in your posts. The more popular a tag is, the larger it will appear in the tag cloud; conversely, tags that are only used rarely will appear in a smaller font or, depending on the total amount of tags you have, not appear at all.
- To place a tag cloud on your WordPress blog, log into your WordPress account and travel to the dashboard. Select "Widgets" from the menu on the left, found under the "Appearance" sub-menu; this will present you with a page containing all available widgets for your blog. Locate the "Tag Cloud" widget in this list and drag it to your sidebar to activate it. You can add a title that will display right above the tag cloud or just leave the title field blank.
- Due to the varying font size, a tag cloud has high visual impact and is quite noticeable, especially when placed close to the top of the sidebar. Each tag in the cloud can be clicked and will lead to a list of all the posts on your blog using that tag; therefore, it offers an easy way for people who are visiting your blog for the first time to explore your content and decide whether your blog is worth a return visit.
- Depending on the WordPress template you are using for your blog, a tag cloud may be unattractive: if the sidebar is narrow, for example, frequently used tags may end up being displayed with just one or two words for each row of text, taking up a large amount of space. If you don't use tags very often or at all, a tag cloud is probably unnecessary, as it would end up containing only a handful of tags if any at all.
