I recommend everyone get up and move.
No, don't get up out of your chairs and move, I want you to continue reading.
Stay put.
Rather, you should all pack and move.
It's actually a liberating experience.
You get to see how much junk and garbage have been cluttering your lives.
What clutters my life? It's a typical list of old magazines, toys, clothes that too big or too small, and papers.
I've moved a few times in the past couple of years and I can tell you from experience that it doesn't get easier but you find ways to make it less tiresome.
As I prepare for a new move, I decided to purge all old documents.
This hasn't been done in many years and I feel that it's time.
We have a shredder and a three-year-old.
This is a great combination for getting rid of old, useless documents.
I recommend getting at least one, preferably the shredder.
I looked through the caverns of my home and I found many documents that make me wonder why I've been carrying these around from house to house.
Some of these documents have been living my a file cabinet for close to ten years.
Obviously, I don't have any use for them, since I forgot that some of these pieces of paper still existed.
Sitting down to sort through a mountain of useless papers, filled me a sense of relief.
It's all old information that doesn't mean anything now and it was exhilarating to turn on the shredder and to say good bye.
While sorting documents, I asked myself the following questions.
- Why do I need bank statements from ten years ago? I don't.
- Is there a reason I need copies of tax returns older than three years old? No.
- Do paystubs from jobs long ago matter in my life now? I don't think so.
- Why did I save all of our bills -- phone, electric, water, credit card, cable, and gas? I was channeling my inner squirrel, perhaps.
You probably aren't getting ready for a big cross-country move like me, but you can still take a minute to look around your house and see what needs to go.
Start with the filing cabinet first and see what sorts of documents have been clogging your files.
It's a good trip down memory lane.
It's a new year and time to start fresh.
Purge.
Purge like there's no tomorrow.
Then again, if there wasn't a tomorrow, why would it matter? That's besides the point.
I'm getting rid of the old, to make room for the new, so in ten years I can do the same thing.
