What Are Language Art Activities for Preschoolers?

    Alphabet Cards

    • Alphabet cards teach preschoolers letter recognition. To create alphabet cards, write upper- and lowercase letters on index cards, and laminate them so that they are durable. Have children take turns picking up alphabet cards with uppercase letters on them and matching them to lowercase letters. You can also have the children sort the alphabet cards into vowels and consonants or spell words.

    Dolch Word List Sentences

    • The Dolch word list contains sight words that are commonly used in books, magazines and newspapers for students from preschool to third grade. According to kidzone.com, there are 40 words on the list, and they range in size from one letter to five letters, such as a, it, the, make and funny. Put up the Dolch word list (or a list of similar words) so that all the children can see it. Go over the words, and have the children copy them down. Ask them to create sentences using the words on your list.

    Read Picture Books

    • Read picture books to preschoolers daily, and ask them questions. Have them look at the cover of a book and make predictions about what will happen in the story. Discuss what the characters are doing in the stories. Incorporate other language arts facets, such as listening, speaking and vocabulary development into each reading lesson.

    ABC Book

    • Have students make an alphabet book to reinforce letter sounds and phonics. Assign a letter to each preschooler and give them construction paper. Help students come up with a phrase and picture for each letter. If there are leftover letters, brainstorm ideas together with them.

    Writing Activities

    • Develop preschoolers' writing skills by practicing sentence building. Begin with a writing prompt, and ask students to fill in the rest of the sentence. Help students get their ideas down on paper. Focus on creating simple sentences that are just a few words, and emphasize writing clearly.

    Expressing Self Verbally

    • Have children practice expressing themselves verbally. Ask preschoolers questions about things that they like, and ask them why they feel that way. Inquire what things the children need, and ask the preschoolers to describe them.
