Sci-tech information: Singapore to launch "Green Lanes" test program
Singapore Land Transport Authority announced recently that it would launch a six-month test program on paving with recycled material.
Long history of new way of paving
The authority has paved a section of 200 meters in an express way. Apart from asphalt, they adopted industrial and domestic blocks of furnace bottom ashes. Besides, the test section was located outside a parking lot for heavy vehicles. There are more traffic and a lot more loads which makes it the perfect place for test.
Singapore proposed a test program on paving with recycled material 20 years ago. That's why there are some in the existing paving material. But in this new plan, recycled material takes up a greater proportion. Asphalt wearing layer, black base, road bottom and road base make up the road. Previously, recycled material only appeared at one layer of the road. Four layers will all be made up of recycled material. After the program, the authority will evaluate the wearing condition. If the result is satisfying, the authority will widely adopt these materials in paving, increasing the proportion.
Depend less on sands overseas
There are reasons for Singapore's obsession with the test program "Green Lanes". To minimize their reliance on imported raw material like sand comes the first. Granite, an important material for paving is mostly imported. With fluctuated prices of the granite and political issues' standing in the way, their raw materials are not easy to get.
Though it is still unclear with the cost effects of the €Green Lanes€, recycled materials do save millions Singapore Dollars compared with granite.
Thorny problems of garbage disposal solved
Environmental friendly €Green Lanes€ also tackles the problems of garbage disposal. Speedy development exerts side effects---producing innumerous garbage. According to statistics from National Environment Agency of Singapore, the citizens produced 5.6 million tons of garbage in 2007.
At the beginning of 1990s, Singapore government started to develop the projects of recycling, encouraging residents and enterprises to minimize the production of trash. Once the "Green Lanes" succeeded, solid garbage would be burned and processed.
