- Apply alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to the infected area with a cotton ball or tissue. If there is a hair protruding from the area, remove it with tweezers and swab the area. If there is a pocket of pus around the area, prick it with a needle sterilized in alcohol to remove the pus. Swab with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide and if a hair is protruding, remove with tweezers.
- Shaving is the main cause of ingrown hair so if you are prone to getting ingrown hair, try an electric razor as these do not cut as close to the skin as a wet razor. If using a wet razor, always use shaving gel as gels contain lubricants that will add moisture to the skin and prevent the hair from curling back under the skin. Depilatory creams are great for leg hair removal as hair is removed from the hair follicle, leaving the skin smooth and leaving you no concern for ingrown hair.
- In some cases, an infection may develop which requires an antibiotic. If the affected shows no sign of healing, a fever develops or there is a red line on the skin coming out from the infected area, see a doctor immediately as there may be a more serious medical condition.
