What Is a Catalina Swordfish?

The Catalina swordfish, like all swordfish, is characterized by its distinctive sword-shaped jaw, around one-third of the size of its body, and the tall, crescent-shaped dorsal fin that rises from its spine. Swordfish are know as "big game fish" due to their large size. They typically weigh between 90 and 150 kg (between 194 and 330 lbs) although larger fish can weigh over 200 kg and are around 4.5 meters (around 14 feet) in length. This makes for a lot of fish servings and one Californian restaurant reports that it pays thousands of dollars for a single large Catalina swordfish. (ref 3).

Swordfish feed at night, rising to the sea surface in search of smaller fish. To fish for Catalina swordfish, you need to hire a charter boat and obtain a California fishing license. These can be purchased in advance or when you arrive at the island. The swordfish boats go out at night and come with an experienced skipper. Most charter boats are equipped with fishing tackle and refreshments are sometimes included in the deal.

Catalina swordfish are sometimes caught using the traditional harpooning method. This involves thrusting a long aluminum or wooden spear into the fish and hauling it aboard. Swordfish are also caught on long fishing lines, measuring up to 40 miles long and supported by floats, from which baited hooks are suspended.
