- 1). Test the tension by making a four-inch square gauge of 14 stitches across for 14 rows. Use a size E crochet hook, or a size larger or smaller, until your find the correct tension to use for your brimmed hat.
- 2). Do a slip knot and then chain three. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain to make a ring. Work in back loops only for the top layer.
- 3). Chain one and make eight single crochets inside the ring. Put a marker on your first stitch.
- 4). Increase each round by eight stitches for rows two until nine. Single crochet into each stitch throughout for 15 more rows, and move your stitch marker to the first stitch at each round to keep track of your row number.
- 5). Begin the brim of the hat by increasing the 26th row by 36 stitches evenly around the row. Move your marker.
- 6). Make another row of single crochet. Move your marker.
- 7). Increase the 28th row by 8 more stitches. Move your marker.
- 8). Repeat the last two steps six more times until you have a total of 164 stitches all around.
- 9). Turn the hat inside out and work in the front loops of each stitch. Follow all the previous seven steps in reverse order, making a slip stitch instead of a single crochet on every stitch of the top layer of your hat.

Fasten off and use the tapestry needle to to hide the ends inside the stitches of your hat.
