- Natural hair is a term often used to refer to African American hair that has not been chemically relaxed or enhanced with hair extensions. Some African Americans may want to return their hair to its natural state and do away with the hassles, and subsequent damage, that constant relaxing may cause. In its natural state, Black hair is pliable and can be shaped in a variety of twists and coils.
- One of the most popular natural hairstyles for Black hair is the two-strand twist, according to celebrity hairstylist Nedjetti of LoveToKnow.com. To achieve this natural style, the hair is washed, conditioned and towel dried to remove excess moisture. TyteCurl.com advises to make a horizontal part three-quarter inch from the nape and a vertical one three-quarter inch from the left side of the head, creating a square. The rest of the hair is pinned up and out of the way. Diagonally divide the section that you parted to create two equal sections. Pomade is applied to each section and the two are twisted together to form one spiral-like twist. This process is repeated throughout the hair to create these double-stranded twists.
- Comb coils are created by wrapping natural hair around the tip of a rat-tail comb to create a small, barrel-like curl that sits against the scalp. To achieve this natural hairstyle, wash and condition the hair to remove any styling products. Towel dry the hair to remove excess moisture and apply an alcohol-free styling gel or jelly on a small section of hair, instructs FromGrandmasKitchen.com. Rest the point of the tail comb against the scalp and evenly wrap the section of hair around the tip in a spiral-like pattern. When the section is completely wrapped around the tail comb gently slide the tip of the tail comb out of the spiraled hair. Repeat this process throughout the hair until it is all coiled.
- A quick way to add style to longer natural hair is to create multiple two-strand flat twists along the front hairline. A small vertical section of hair is separated from the rest of the hair. Secure the remaining hair with an elastic band so that it does not get in your way while creating the twist. Separate the vertical section into two equal parts at the hairline. Begin twisting them together in a spiral pattern, working away from the hairline and picking up and adding new hair as you go. The twist can be created from front to back or, for a quicker hairstyle, twist only the first three or four inches of the hair and secure with a small clear elastic. The rest of the hair is then worn natural.
