Summer Fun with the Kids

Remember when we were kids and summer fun meant nothing fancy or expensive? Summer is the perfect time to teach foster children or newly adopted kids some great fun activities that they may have been missing out on. Isn't that part of the fun of being a foster or adoptive parent? In case you've forgotten, here is a quick list of some of my favorite summer fun and inexpensive activities.

  1. Catch fire flies.

  1. Go fishing.
  2. Camp out, even if it's just in your back yard.
  3. Cook over a fire, with adult help of course, hot dogs, marshmallows and SMORES!
  4. Walk barefoot in the grass.
  5. Walk barefoot at the beach.
  6. Wash the dog in the back yard, make sure to wear a swimsuit.
  7. Skip stones at the lake, or a pond.
  8. Make your own Popsicle with Kool-Aid or fruit juice.
  9. Make root beer floats.
  10. Make home made ice cream.
  11. Eat watermelon and have a seed spitting contest to see who can spit the farthest.
  12. Run through the sprinklers.
  13. Set the sprinkler in front of a swing set and swing through the water. Be sure to hold on tight, it can get slippery.
  14. Have a water balloon fight.
  15. Build a sandcastle
  16. See who can build the biggest banana split.
  17. Go on a picnic.
  18. Go canoeing.
  19. Ride your bike around the neighborhood.
  20. Climb trees.
  21. See how many locust shells you can find.
  22. Participate in your local library reading program.
  23. Start a game of volleyball in your backyard and invite the neighbors to play.
  24. Go swimming in a pond or lake.
  25. Forget about bed times, sometimes.

  1. Sleep in, a few times.
  2. Go horseback riding.
  3. Go on a summer vacation.
  4. Star gaze and try to find different constellations.
