What Are the First Signs of Menopause?

The first signs of menopause can vary with each individual woman.
The average age when a woman will first notice signs is around age 51, though some women experience it later in life around age 60 or as early as their 30's.
The reason for this wide range in years can be due to medical reasons, genetics, or the woman's natural progression toward menopause.
Though all women will experience menopause symptoms, not all women will experience the same symptoms.
One of the first signs of menopause is when the woman notices that her menstruation cycle starts to change.
Her cycles may become irregular resulting in shorter cycles, missed periods, or bleeding shorter or longer days than normal.
Other symptoms may include times of heavy blood flow, times of very little blood flow, and cramping.
This is due to the body's slowing down of estrogen production.
Hormone imbalance plays a major role in the early signs of menopause.
Once menopause begins, the body stops producing normal levels of estrogen and progesterone.
This imbalance can be the cause for irritability, anxiety, mood swings, low sex drive, or an inability to concentrate.
Another hormone which can exacerbate already uncomfortable symptoms at this time is testosterone.
It can be responsible for the increased growth of unwanted hair or hair loss.
Hot flashes and night sweats are very common signs of menopause and can lead one to have unusual sleep patterns not experienced previously.
This is also due to the loss or decline of the hormone estrogen.
Sleepless nights can also be attributed to the mood swings or depression which may be associated with menopause.
Additional signs of early menopause include heart palpitations, incontinence, dry skin, and loss of sexual desire.
If you notice any or all of these typical first signs of menopause but aren't sure that you are entering this stage of life, you may want to consult with your doctor about whether or not you are experiencing the onset of menopause.
