- Let your baby play dress up for her first birthday photo. Put her in one of Mom's hats or let her play with some high heels, or put her in a frilly tutu. For a boy, loop one of Dad's ties around his neck loosely or one of Dad's work shirts. Or dress him in a cute costume or special outfit. Add a pair of fairy wings to your daughter's dress or let your son play with a pirate eye patch.
- It's a tradition for parents to let their kids play in their first birthday cake. Capture this moment by lying the cake on top of a sheet or towel and strip baby down to her diaper. Take some cute photos of a messy, frosting-covered child for posterity. Add some balloons around the baby weighed down by presents, either real or fake, for the photo shoot.
- Get the whole family involved to celebrate the year that this tiny person has become of part of their lives. A photo of the birthday baby with the entire family would be sweet or do separate pictures of Mom and baby, Dad with baby or siblings all holding the birthday boy together. If the child is walking already, take a few shots of him holding hands and walking with Mom or Dad. These types of photos can also be done outdoors. If there are several siblings, line them up holding hands with the baby in the middle.
- Get a huge box and wrap it in birthday-themed wrapping paper. Pop the birthday child inside the present, and put a birthday hat on her head for a festive, party-themed photo. The baby may have a blast playing in the box, especially if you get some balloons, toys or noisemakers involved. Scatter confetti around the box and try to catch some photos of the baby laughing and smiling.
