- 1). You need to clear out the old mortar that is no longer viable. Get a sturdy putty knife or screw driver to do this, and remove the mortar from around the crack. Once this is done, you can brush out loose pieces with a wire brush and then clean the area with a dry towel.
- 2). Next is mixing the mortar. To do this, use one part cement and two parts sand in the plastic tub. You will know when it is ready by the color of the mixture. It should be gray.
- 3). Once you are finished mixing, it is time to add water. Gradually add water until you have a batter-like texture.
- 4). Next, take your spray bottle that is filled with water, and spray the foundation area where you will be adding mortar. This is especially important in dry, warm areas with low humidity.
- 5). Use a trowel to apply the mortar. Push the mortar in firmly because you want it to go far into the cracks. Use the trowel to remove any excess mortar.
