- 1). Copy your GMC VIN from the tag on the windshield on the driver's side. Look through the windshield to see it more easily. Also find it on your registration, proof-of-insurance card or title.
- 2). Compare each individual character to a chart to decode it. The first three characters reveal the country, make and model. For example, "1" means "U.S.," "G" means "General Motors" and "D" means "truck." The next five characters describe the weight rating (GVWR), chassis type (two- or four-wheel drive), series ("3" means the 1-ton 3500), body type (two- or four-door) and engine. The ninth digit derives from an algorithm to prevent fraud. The 10th character, "6," stands for 2006. The 11th character tells the manufacturing plant and the remaining characters are the serial number.
- 3). Type the VIN into the block marked "Enter VIN Here" at Decodethis (see References). Click on "Decode" and, after the next screen appears, scroll down to the tabs. "General" shows body style and engine details, along with other information. Additional tabs include installed and optional equipment and other information.
- 4). Type the VIN into the block marked "Enter a VIN" at VINquery (see References) and click on "Go." The next screen identifies the year and make and offers four levels of VIN reports for sale from 50 cents to $1.90. Select from the "Report Type" drop-down menu.
