- 1). Attach the Black Beauty to a spinning rod. Unlike other fishing rods, spinning rods do not have a trigger-shaped piece of plastic on the handle. Spool the rod and reel with 4- to 10-lb. fishing line.
- 2). Tie a lure to the end of the line with a Palomar knot (see Resources). Use a lure that weighs less than 3/8 oz.
- 3). Set the drag on the Black Beauty. A knob on top of the reel controls the drag. Turn the knob clockwise to tighten it all the way, then turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Loosen it to the point that it takes a strong and steady pull before the drag system releases line from the spool.
- 4). Hold the rod with your casting hand. The stem of the reel -- where it meets the rod -- should be between your middle and ring fingers. Grab the line where it comes off the reel with the tip of your index finger.
- 5). Open the bail of the reel by flipping it up.
- 6). Swing the rod over your casting shoulder, then bring it forward in a casting motion.
- 7). Remove your index finger from the line as the tip of the rod travels past your shoulder.
- 8). Flip the bale down after the lure hits the water. Reel the lure in by turning the handle of the reel clockwise.
