Homemade birthday thank you cards are often well received because of the care that goes into making one. When the card is customized to fit the person, the token of appreciation can warm the heart. Dress up your cards with delicate pressed flowers or other natural materials. If the recipient likes sunflowers, cut out a sunflower with construction paper to adorn the card. Or, consider making cards with rubber stamps, which can imprint special symbols on your card. Rubber stamps come in all shapes and sizes; you can even create your own stamps (see Resources).

E-cards are cards that are sent electronically to an email address. Sending an e-card lets someone know how thankful you are for a gift. However you may want to also send a card in the mail or be selective on who you give an e-card to. Not everyone checks their email address on a daily basis, and e-cards are not quite as "special" as something with your handwriting on it. However, if the person you want to thank is a person who regularly sends e-cards, then sending an e-card to this person might be appropriate.

Some people only feel comfortable simply signing their names on a store-bought thank you card. However, if you want to show the person receiving the card that you really care, put significantly more thought into it. Think about the gift you received and keep in mind what type of person gave it to you. What could you say to her from your heart that would be touching? Address the person directly and say something specific about why you are thankful for the gift.

If a new friend gave you a handmade quilt for your birthday you could say something like this: "Elizabeth, Thank you so very much for the beautiful handmade quilt. I can see that a great deal of love and care went into this quilt, and I am truly grateful to have received it from you. I will always treasure this beautiful blanket, and I know it will help to keep our family warm during the cold winter months. Yours truly, Sarah Rachel."
