- 1). Buy some rubbing alcohol, dip a soft cloth or cotton swab into it and then rub the stained spot on the leather until the stain comes out. This is especially useful for the stubborn ink stains or paint. Alternatively, you can use oil-free cuticle remover (do not use nail polish remover) which you can apply and leave overnight, wiping it off the next day with a damp cloth.
- 2). Remove water marks by adding some more water to the area with a moistened cloth and rubbing it in. Then, let the area dry naturally, this should make the original stain blend in with the rest of the leather tone.
- 3). Clean stains from leather using a combination of lemon juice (one part) and cream of tartar (one part). Mix together and rub the paste onto the leather stain with a cloth and leave for a few hours if necessary. Wipe it off and, if the stain is still there, repeat the process. Use this procedure for any kind of stain.
- 4). Clean salt stains from leather by combining one part vinegar with one part water. Dip a cloth in this liquid and dab it all over the area to remove salt. Repeat this if needed until all staining is gone. This solution is useful for leather shoes that are stained by salt from the roads.
- 5). Add a small amount of saddle soap to the stained area and rub it in gently with a damp cloth. Wipe it off with a damp cloth until there is no lather left. Let the leather dry naturally. Use only saddle soap on unfinished leather, no other soaps or detergents.
- 6). Buy rain and stain proofing for leather shoes or handbags to help keep them stain free. Apply as directed on the product. You can also use a leather cleaner to remove stains and can purchase it from shoe stores or other leather goods suppliers.
