- 1). Find a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants that fits your child in the color you want your ferret costume to be. Ferrets can be white, brown, black or gray, so any of these colors will work.
- 2). Cut the fake fur into a piece that will cover the entire back section of the hooded sweatshirt. If you have two colors of fake fur, cut out a patch of the back fur and place a patch of the other color in its place. Reverse the process for the front section, but cut out two sections -- one for each side of the zipper. Leave the zipper exposed so that it can come off and on easily.
- 3). Zip the hooded sweatshirt closed, and place newspaper inside of it to prevent the glue from running through the fabric. Using a hot glue gun, attach the fake fur to the back, and allow to dry the recommended time for the glue. Repeat process for the front sections.
- 4). Cut four strips of fake fur the length of the sweat pants from the waist to the ankle. Place newspaper inside of the pants, and using the hot glue gun, attach two strips to the front of the pants and allow to dry. Repeat the process attaching the two back strips. You do not need to cover the complete width of the leg. Be careful to avoid attaching the fake fur to the elastic waist area, because this will prevent the pants from expanding.
- 5). Cut out a strip of fake fur that is long enough to cover the hood from shoulder to shoulder. Place newspaper inside the hood, using the glue gun, attach the strip of fur to the hood. Allow to dry per instructions.
- 6). Cut out a large, triangular section of the fake fur that is about 4 inches wide and 6 inches long for the tail. The tail should be proportional to the child's height -- no longer than to the back of his knees. Place the cotton batting in the center of the piece, and overlap one side to the next, fur side up. The result will be a pointed tail the shape of a ship's sail. Using the hot glue gun, carefully attach the seam, leaving one end open to attach to the sweat pants. Allow the tail section to dry according to the instructions on the glue. Attach the tail to the sweat pants directly below the waist.
- 7). Create the ears by cutting out two triangles of fake fur. Glue a triangle of pink construction paper to the inside of the ears. Cut two slits on the top of the hood, and attach the ears from underneath the hood.
- 8). Hang the costume on a plastic hanger with the newspaper inside of it for at least 24 hours before wearing. Cover your child's face lightly with the white face paint, avoiding the eye area. Add a pink nose. Using the black eye liner pencil, draw whiskers on her cheeks. Cover shoes with gray or black socks.
